What Is This?

A complete proof-of-concept showing how to use Google Sheets as a database for your launch dashboard. No server needed, works across all devices, free forever.

📊 poc-sheets.html - The Dashboard POC

What it does:

• Interactive task list with checkboxes
• Reads from Google Sheets
• Writes back to Google Sheets (when Apps Script is configured)
• Auto-syncs every 30 seconds
• Works on phone, tablet, laptop - any device with a browser

How to use:

1. Open in browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc.)
2. Click "Load Demo" to test without setup
3. OR enter your Sheet ID + Apps Script URL to connect to real data

⚙️ google-apps-script.js - Backend for Writes

What it does:

• Receives update requests from the dashboard
• Writes changes back to your Google Sheet
• Enables cross-device sync

How to use:

1. Open your Google Sheet
2. Go to Extensions → Apps Script
3. Paste this code
4. Deploy as Web App
5. Copy the URL into dashboard

Why Google Sheets?

Answer: Yes, it really works! Here's why it's great:

⚠️ Limitations

1. Initial setup - Need to deploy Apps Script once (10 min)
2. Sync delay - Auto-refresh every 30 seconds (not instant)
3. Scale limit - Fine for 50-100 tasks, not ideal for 10,000+
4. Public URL - Apps Script URL is public (but only works with your Sheet ID)

🔄 Alternatives We Discussed

If Google Sheets doesn't work for you:

• Supabase (PostgreSQL in cloud) - More powerful, still free tier
• PocketBase (SQLite) - Simpler, need to host somewhere
• localStorage + Export/Import - No sync, manual file sharing
• Shared Device - One iPad as command center

Data Flow

Reading (No Auth Needed):

1. Dashboard fetches: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/{SHEET_ID}/gviz/tq?tqx=out:json
2. Google returns task data as JSONP
3. Dashboard renders checkboxes

Writing (Requires Apps Script):

1. User checks box
2. Dashboard POSTs to Apps Script URL with row/column/value
3. Apps Script updates Google Sheet
4. Next auto-refresh shows updated data on all devices
